Resume Writing Workshop at UMass Amherst
Resume Writing Workshop at UMass AmherstAre you going to attend a resume writing workshop at UMass Amherst? Although I have not attended one myself, the faculty and staff of the workshop seemed very knowledgeable about your particular type of job.The workshop was based on resume examples, and that's why the instructors put on their study guides. As a writer, I'm not sure how much I learned from the study guides, but from what I've seen, the topics covered are really just the tip of the iceberg. The first thing I learned is that the potential employer doesn't care about what your education is like, unless you tell them so. For example, he told us that if we wrote a four-year degree, the employer will say, 'So, you've got your degree?' They usually don't care about anything beyond your bachelor's degree. So, he put us in writing sample sections, and we answered the same question over again. We wrote letters to employers, a resume, a cover letter, an interview questionnaire, and he even h ad us write about three samples of our work for his own use. (That's another lesson that I picked up - your 'work' is the first chapter of your CV.)The thing that surprised me most about the format is that it is really a book of employable sections. At first I thought the sections were just little notes or bullet points, but I read through a chapter, and realized they were actual chapters. That part took some getting used to, as I thought they were just notes, but it was easier than I thought. The second lesson that I learned was that the workshop gives you the option of choosing which one of the dozen or so sample topics you want to focus on. The reason is to keep the student from getting bored, because you never know when you'll get to all the topics. They all follow a similar format. The third lesson I learned was that they emphasize being able to write well. During the presentation, the instructor gave examples of different types of samples he had, and one of them was called; 'Bla ck Coffee.'It's an example, because he was talking about a company called Black Coffee, and they make coffee for a living. He asked the students how well they could write about a product that you're trying to sell.
